Alfred Brendel won a prize at the Busoni Competition in Bolzano in 1949. His repertoire ranges from Bach to Schönberg. A regular guest at the world’s major concert halls in New York, London, Paris, Vienna, Berlin and Tokyo, he was the first to record the complete piano works of Bach, and he has performed several Beethoven cycles with all the piano sonatas and concertos.

He also took a prominent role in establishing Schubert’s sonatas and Schönberg’s piano concerto in the international concert repertoire, as well as rekindling interest in Liszt’s compositions for piano. Alfred Brendel has also gained a reputation as a writer. His collected poems were published in 2003 by Hanser ("Spiegelbild und schwarzer Spuk”), the collected essays "Alfred Brendel - Über Musik” 2005 by Piper.
