From his debut as a fifteen-year-old cellist in 1942 the pianist, cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, born in Baku (Azerbaijan), made himself noticed. After the War, he became known to an international audience, who soon acclaimed him as a worthy successor to the great Pablo Casals. His wife Galina Vishnevskaya, a leading soprano at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, accompanied the versatile musician on piano, making a name for herself as a pianist also.
As a cellist and a conductor, Rostropovich was one of the greatest interpreters of the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, with whom he studied composition. Rostropovich gave many performances all over the world in support of human rights, of which he was a dedicated and committed advocate. He died on April 27, 2007.

Obituary - Mstislav Rostropovich
On April 27, 2007, Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich died in Moscow. He was one of the greatest musical personalities of our time. His death is an irreplaceable loss for all lovers of music, for freedom-minded people and for committed citizens of the world. His life was exemplary of the power of the language of music and showed how art can actively influence all fields of life, including politics.
Mstislav Rostropovich viewed music as an important part of our existence and made an enormous contribution to the causes of peace, humanity and justice in the world.
We are very proud of his association with the "International Beethoven Competition for Piano Bonn", which he supported with both actively and with advice. We will continue to strive to deserve his trust in the future. Supporting young people always constituted an important part of his activities. Thus, he was enthusiastic about the programmatic orientation of our competition from the very onset.
We will always remember him gratefully.
