Ilona Schmiel

Ilona Schmiel, born in 1967, studied music teaching, classical philology and arts management in Berlin and Oslo. Her professional career involved work for the Donaueschingen Music Festival and the Olympic Arts Festival in Lillehammer, as well as tours of the Arena di Verona opera and a period serving as artistic and administrative director of the concert hall Die Glocke in Bremen from 1998 to 2002.

Since 1996, she has been a visiting lecturer in arts and media management at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, Berlin. In 2004, she became director and manager of the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, bringing in some fresh ideas.

She has served on the jury of the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Bundeskulturstiftung) since 2005 and has been working for the Ernst von Siemens Foundation for Music since 2007.
