Jürgen Nimptsch (born in 1954) was elected mayor at the local elections in August 2009 by the people of Bonn with over 40 percent of the votes and sworn in at the constituent council meeting on October 29, 2009. His term of office is six years.
Born in Wesseling, Mr. Nimptsch graduated in German studies and sports science from Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn in 1978. Following his teacher training in Siegen, he worked as a teacher at high schools in Düsseldorf and Troisdorf and as head teacher of the comprehensive school in Troisdorf. Between 1996 and taking office as mayor, Mr. Nimptsch was head of the integrated comprehensive school in Bonn-Beuel, which is considered a model school in the region for individual advancement, international exchange and social interaction, and was awarded the German School Prize for the best secondary school in 2009.
Since the early 1980s, Jürgen Nimptsch has been involved in various trade union and educational projects, including as a member of the regional board of the Trade Union for Education and Science from 1988 through 1996, in the model project “Learning for Europe“ (“Lernen für Europa“) and as facilitator of the program “Shaping and Opening Up School Life“ (“Gestaltung und Öffnung des Schullebens“).
As mayor of the German United Nations City, Mr. Nimptsch intends to further enhance Bonn’s profile as an international location. In keeping with the “Spirit of Bonn”, he would like to foster a culture of interaction and cooperation, exchange and active participation.
Jürgen Nimptsch is married with two grown-up children. His main hobby is culture, in particular theater, and he was director of the theatre group “Cäcilia Wolkenburg“ in Cologne from 2001 through 2009.
