As a former director of the Beethoven House and member of the Bonn Council of Culture, Prof. Dr. Eckhardt, who was born in 1943, is closely associated with the composer and his birthplace. After studying music teaching, history and musicology in Mainz, he worked for some time as a secondary school teacher before pursuing his career in arts management.
From 1971 to 1979 he worked for Schott music publishers and was also general manager of the German Association of Music Teachers (VDS). Later he became secretary-general of the German Music Council (DMR) in Bonn, before taking up the new position of director of the Beethoven House in July 1998.
Andreas Eckhardt taught arts management at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Hamburg. Since 1999 he has been President of the Hindemith Foundation at Blonay, Switzerland. Furthermore he is a member of advisory councils of several music festivals as well as the German Fund For Musical Instruments, the German Music Information Center and the Jürgen Ponto Foundation.
