Zhouhui Shen earned both her Bachelor's and Master’s degrees at the Juilliard School in New York under the guidance of Hung-Kuan Chen. Shortly after beginning her musical training, she was admitted to the Shanghai Music Middle School (affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music), where she studied with Yunlin Yang and received a scholarship for outstanding achievements in both artistic and academic performance.
Zhouhui is a prizewinner of numerous national and international competitions, including the 10th International Telekom Beethoven Piano Competition Bonn (Third Prize, 2023), the 9th International Piano Competition for Young Musicians in the Netherlands (Third Prize & Press Award, 2016), the Juilliard Piano Concerto Competition (First Prize, 2022), the 4th “Golden Lotus” Music Competition (First Prize, 2020), the 63rd “GROTRIA” International Piano Competition (Third Prize, 2018), the Aloha International Piano Competition in the USA (Third Prize, 2021), and “The Golden Sunflower” National Youth Piano Competition (First Prize, 2015).
Her recent concert highlights include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn conducted by Dirk Kaftan at the Telekom Forum in Bonn, and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Juilliard Orchestra under Speranza Scappucci at Alice Tully Hall in New York. In 2024, she made her solo recital debut at the Orangerie in Kirchheimbolanden, Germany. Zhouhui has also performed at numerous prestigious venues worldwide, including the concert hall of the Beethoven House in Bonn, the concert hall of the Enschede Conservatory in the Netherlands, Paul Hall at Juilliard School, the Shanghai Conservatory Concert Hall, the Shanghai Grand Theater, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall, the Ningbo Grand Theater, the Shenzhen Concert Hall, the Chengdu City Concert Hall, and the Kunming Concert Hall.
Zhouhui has participated in various music festivals, including the Beijing International Music Festival & Academy, the Shanghai International Piano Festival, and the Shanghai Baroque Chamber Music Festival. In 2023, she performed Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio with the Beethoven Trio Bonn (Mikhail Ovrutsky, violin; Grigory Alumyan, cello) in Bonn, Germany. She has also taken part in masterclasses with world-renowned pianists such as Veda Kaplinsky, Matti Raekallio, Jerome Lowenthal, Robert Levin, Boris Slutsky, Pavel Gililov, Mikhail Voskresensky, Richard Goode, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Douglas Humphreys, Marc Silverman, Nicolas Namoradze, Meng-Chieh Liu, Mingqiang Li, and many others.
In August 2024, her post-competition interview titled “The Joy of Music: Insights from Young Pianist Zhouhui Shen” was published in Piano Artistry – the leading and only academic journal for piano music in China.
Playing a wrong note is insignificant but playing without passion is unforgivable.
